How to Pray Salah Step by Step: A Beginner's Guide

Salah (prayer) is the second pillar of Islam and the daily connection between a believer and Allah. Before You Pray: Preparation

Before beginning Salah, make sure of three things:

Clean place and clothing — pray in a clean spot, in modest, clean clothes.
Facing the Qibla — face the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah.
Intention (niyyah) — make the intention in your heart for the prayer you are about to perform.

The Steps of One Rak'ah

A single unit of prayer, or rak'ah, follows this order:

Takbir — raise your hands and say "Allahu Akbar" to begin.
Qiyam (standing) — recite Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by a short surah or passage.
Ruku (bowing) — bow with hands on knees, saying "Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem" three times.
Stand up — rise saying "Sami Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal hamd."
Sujood (prostration) — prostrate with forehead, nose, palms, knees and toes on the ground, saying "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" three times.
Sit briefly, then perform a second sujood the same way.

This completes one rak'ah. Each prayer has a set number of rak'ahs.

Completing the Prayer

After the final rak'ah, sit for the Tashahhud, send blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him), and end the prayer with the Tasleem — turning your head right then left, saying "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah" each time.

Fajr — 2 rak'ahs
Dhuhr — 4 rak'ahs
Asr — 4 rak'ahs
Maghrib — 3 rak'ahs
Isha — 4 rak'ahs
